God Is A Homeschooling Dad (Deut. 6)

December 25, 2012 by Pito

Since God is the premiere homeschooling Dad, it is no surprise that He wants His people to be home-schooled. In our passage we find that this is exactly what He wants, what He commands.

The foundation of all of life is that God is One. The three persons of the Trinity are One in their essence. They are spirit, infinite, eternal and unchangeable in their being, wisdom, justice, holiness, goodness and truth. The Trinity is the model for all of life. Believing God is a monad, a singularity, has a major problem. If God is love, as the Orthodox Jews, the Jehovah’s Witnesses and the Unitarians believe, they have a big, a HUGE problem. If God was alone before He created, how did God know love?  If God had to create man to know love, then God is dependent on His creation, which makes Him not God. Islam also professes to believe in one god, a god of brute power. Since we become like the God we worship, it is not surprising that Islam is a religion of brute power and its concomitant, violence. Fortunately, all Muslims do not take their brand of monotheism to its extreme conclusion.

The doctrine of the Trinity does not have these inherent difficulties. Because God has existed in three persons for all eternity, they formed an eternal society of love. God did not have to create someone to love. Understanding the implications of Trinitarian doctrine solves all the distortions of philosophers, whether they are in the universities or on the streets.

God wants us to love Him with all our being and we should. He has given us life and all things richly to enjoy. It is reasonable that the creature should worship the Creator. The promises to Israel are promises to us in the New Covenant also. If we obey we will be blessed and if we disobey we will be cursed. We “reap what we sow.” While we recognize that by faith in Christ our sins are forgiven, we also recognize that “… and holiness without which no man shall see the Lord.”  In the Christian life, we must not pit works against faith, nor grace against the law. It is both/and, not either/or.

It is essential that we teach and warn our children so that the blessings given to one generation do not become a curse to the next generation. God does not want us to send our children away to be educated by others. He requires fathers and mothers to raise up their children in the fear and admonition of the Lord. We are to do this all day long and into the night. We are to confront them and ourselves with the wisdom of God which is His Word. This Word is to be in our hearts. We also write it on our doorposts to remind us of what is to be in our hearts.

We have all failed in these responsibilities and we repent as we prepare for the year to come. It is time to put away childish things and to act like men, like the mature Man, Jesus Christ. May God grant that we all grow up this coming year, into the glorious image of our Lord and Savior. There is no time to waste. Life is a vapor and only what we do for Christ will last. Let us be about the Father’s business without delay.
